How to calculate your university grade with Weighted Average ?

Calculate your uni grade

Most universities use a Weighted Average grading system, where each part of the course takes part in your final grade. For example you can have a Midterm (20%), an Assignment (20%) and a Final exam (60%). Instead of manually calculating your total mark or the mark you need to pass the class, you can use a tool like GradeFormula.com .

How do I calculate my weighted university grade?

In order to find your Total Grade (using weighted average) for your university courses, we take the marks multiplied by their respective weights, sum them together, and then divide the total by the sum of the weights. For example:

Weighted Average = (Mark1 × Weight1 + Mark2 × Weight2) / (Weight1 + Weight2)

Let’s say the course consists of 30% Coursework, 10% Lab and 60% Final exam: (note that the total weight should be 100%)

Weight (%)Your Grade (%)
Coursework3080
Lab1075
Final Exam6085
Weighted Average (total grade) = (80 × 0.3 + 75 × 0.1 + 85 × 0.6) / (0.3 + 0.1 + 0.6) = 82.5 (% total Grade)

Take a look at this example in GradeFormula

If you want to find the grade for one part in order to get 50% in the total grade, you need to create equation and solve for that unknown.

About GradeFormula.com

This free to use tool, takes the mark for each part of your course (assignments or modules) and can calculate three different things.

  1. Calculate Total Mark: Enter your marks for each component and click “Calculate”. The total mark will be displayed.
  2. Calculate Needed Mark for 50% (Pass): Leave one mark empty and click “Calculate”. The calculator will determine the mark needed for the empty component to achieve 50% overall.
  3. Calculate Needed Mark for Specific Total: Enter a desired total mark and leave one component mark empty. Click “Calculate” to determine the mark needed for the empty component to achieve the desired total mark.
